Alvaro Morata needs help

Alvaro Morata missed a number of gilt-edged chances during last night’s game against Arsenal, it now appears he needs to work on his finishing and fast.

When Morata was signed from Real Madrid for £58 million last summer, the deal was regarded as a good one for Chelsea and rightly so. The striker possessed the needed qualities and for a player at his age, already had top flight appearances for Real Madrid and Juventus along with the Spanish National Team.

Over the course of the season, Morata has justified his massive price tag, his contributions have been vital to Chelsea’s involvement in four competitions, his link up play with Eden Hazard at times has been top notch, coupled with his fantastic relationship with Cesar Azpilicueta on and off the pitch (Morata has scored six goals from his crosses this season).

However, Morata has appeared short of confidence in recent matches, he missed sitters against Stoke city last week and that worrying trend reared its head last night as he squandered clear-cut goal-scoring chances, Conte’s reaction to his misses pretty much sums up the frustration around the Chelsea camp right now.

Conspiracy theorists might claim that the continuous preference of Morata in  games apparently due to Conte’s lack of trust in Mitchy Batshauyi has the Spaniard fluffing his lines as a result of fatigue, but Conte has played Hazard as a striker in recent matches giving the 25 year-old a much needed rest.

Other claims might be the striker has hurried from his previous injury, yet his holdup play and positioning last night was commendable, the only black spot to his game was his amateur finishing.

It’s inexcusable for a striker of a top team to squander such chances in an important game. With Manchester City surging to the Title, his wastefulness has cost his team further points in the race to be among the top four, it is evidently clear that the striker needs to work on his finishing. His continued profligacy might be the difference between a trophy for Chelsea or a plain top four battle at the end of the season.
