Arsenal £60m-rated target submits transfer request after failed bid

Arsenal target Gelson Martins has reportedly submitted a transfer request to Sporting Lisbon as he attempts to force through a transfer away from the club. The Portuguese international has been a subject of two failed bids by the Gunners and has set his heart on leaving Sporting Lisbon this summer.

Earlier reports from Portuguese Tabloid A Bola had claimed that the 23-year-old had canceled his contract with the Lisbon giants. However, club insiders say that several players including Gelson have submitted letters of resignation to the Portuguese club.

Arsenal are in a pole position to sign the highly-rated winger. However, Gelson is also on the radar of top European clubs including rivals Chelsea.

Sporting Lisbon is currently in a state of turmoil with many of the club stars keen to leave the club. Toward the end of last season, a group of masked attackers broke into the club’s training ground and caused a melee which left several players and staffs injured. Club captain Rui Patricio had earlier sent a letter indicating his wish to leave the club with others following suit.

Gelson is viewed as an ideal signing to boost the Gunner’s attack with Unai Emery keen to add a threat on the wings with the Portuguese winger identified as a perfect fit.

Gelson was impressive last term, as he scored 13 goals and contributed 13 assists in all competitions.
