Arsenal reportedly missed out from signing Lille defender Hamza Mendyl due to work permit issues according to reports from Europe. Goal.com claims in a  new report that Arsenal has been favourites to land the Morrocan youngster this summer before paper work issues led the player to move to German side Schalke O4.

Mendyl impressed in his debut season in France despite making just 13 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit Lille. That was enough to convince Arsenal transfer chiefs to place a bid for the player which Lille accepted but the London club could not get a work permit for the player.

Schalke O4 quickly swooped on one of Europe’s brightest prospects and the player has settled nicely to live in Germany. Arsenal were also interested in Turkish star Caglar Soyuncu but a move failed to materialize as he joined Leicester on deadline day.

The Gunners have not seen much improvements in the backline shipping in 5 goals despite massive recruitment by Unai Emery. Arsenal spent over £80million in bringing in players which includes Guendouzi, Lichtsteiner, Sokratis, Torreira and Bernd Leno.

The North London club next face West Ham in the league and would be hopeful for an improved performance from the defence against Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
