Why Arsenal Coach accosted Lucas Torreira after defeat to Chelsea

Arsenal 3-2 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday made it two defeats out of two matches for Unai Emery as the gunners went down valiantly to the blues. In related news, Lucas Torreira was accosted on the pitch by one of Emery’s assistant for the role he played in Chelsea’s winning goal.

The Uruguay international was a second-half substitute in the match coming in for Granit Xhaka at halftime as Emery sought to tighten the midfield after Xhaka’s anonymous display in the first half.  Torreira actually brought sturdiness to the midfield making some interceptions but crucially made a mistake for the winning goal.

The Uruguay international was caught out due to the tempo of the game perhaps used to the much slower tempo in the Serie A, unlike the EPL where most teams use high pressing. Lacazette under-hit a pass to Torreira instead of moving towards the ball the Uruguay dynamo was waiting for the ball. Within a twinkle of eye Hazard intercepted the pass and three passes later the ball landed onto the feet of Alonso who scored from close range.

After the game Arsenal coach, Juan Carlos entered the pitch and confronted Torreira over his mistake and pointed out what he should have done in that position.

Torreira is a solid midfielder and would come good for the gunners if given time. Unai Emery definitely likes him and he should feature against West Ham as a replacement for the ineffective Granit Xhaka.
