Better than David Luiz – Chelsea open talks to sign no-nonsense defender

According to transfer expert, Gianluca Di Marzio Chelsea are preparing a bid for Atletico Madrid defender Stefan Savic.

The Montenegro international is being viewed as a replacement for flamboyant defender Luiz who is expected to leave the Stamford Bridge this summer.

The defender who previously played in England for Manchester city has quietly turned to an efficient defender under the tutelage of Simeone.

Marzio also insists that the player has become a key target for the London club with Juventus also interested in the 27-year-old defender.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of head coach Antonio Conte, the Blues are set to move on with the transfer. Chelsea are expected to submit a bid for the player and have reached out to his representatives to discuss personal terms.

Juventus could yet hijack the deal with the Italian club hoping to convince the player to switch to Italy. Chelsea have had a quiet summer so far in terms of transfers, with persisting air of uncertainty surrounding the club.

Chelsea fans have responded lukewarmly to the news of a potential deal with Savic, with many believing he does not add extra quality to the backline.

Savic made 35 appearances for Spanish side Atletico Madrid winning the Europa league.
