Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan is apparently on his way to Italian side Cagliari after both clubs reached an agreement. The Estonian international has been a backup player since the arrival if Virgil VanDirk in January and was expected to leave this summer.

The 32-year-old signed from Augsburg in 2016 and has been a regular making 53 appearances for the Reds. According to club sources the transfer is expected to cost Cagliari £2million and the player has traveled to Italy to conduct a medical ahead of the move.

Klavan was reportedly looking for first-team opportunities with this move having fallen down the pecking line at Liverpool. He was a deadline loan target for Newcastle United but the move failed to materialize.

The Italian transfer window closes on Friday and Cagliari will have to move quickly to complete the deal for the sturdy defender. Klavan has been on the end of some famous result scoring a late winner against Burnley in January and against Derby County.

Liverpool have enough cover in the centre back position with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez adequate cover for the first choice pairing of Van Dirk and Lovren.  Liverpool face Crystal Palace on Monday as they seek to consolidate on the opening day victory against WestHam.
