Done: Chelsea agree deal to sign £53.4m star as third summer signing

Chelsea are set to bring in their third arrival of the season with news from Spanish tabloid Marca reporting that a loan deal has been agreed for Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic. The report also says that the Blues beat of challenge from rivals United to snap the 24-year-old on a season-long loan with an option to buy.

Kovacic had earlier in the summer told reporters of his desire to leave the Bernabeu to get first-team opportunities. Kovacic has been unable to force his way into the Galacticos midfield ahead of first-team stalwarts Kroos, Modric and Casemeiro leading to his decision to move this summer.

This alerted several clubs to his situation leading to interest from United and Chelsea for his signature. United had been favourites to sign the player with Madrid accepting a bid from the Red Devils but Kovacic rejected the offer.

Apparently, he does not wish to play for United and prefers Maurizio Sarri style to Mourinho more structured approach.  Marca revealed that the terms of the loan deal stipulate that Chelsea would have to pay £53.4million to make the deal permanent.

Kovacic would be an excellent addition to the midfield in tandem with Kante and Jorginho and could be the driving force for the Blues this season.
