Done deal: Arsenal announce first January transfer

Arsenal have announced the transfer of Emiliano Martinez on a 6 months loan to Championship side Reading. Martinez was the third choice goalkeeper behind Bernd Leno and Petr Cech and has decided to seek first-team opportunities away from the club.

The 26-year-old joined Arsenal at the age of 17 but has failed to impose himself in the first team. He has made only 14 first team appearances for the Gunners during his time in London.

Martinez has had series of loan moves to Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolves and Getafe.

This season, he featured just once in the 1-0 victory over Qarabaq in the Europa League. It is hoped that this latest loan move would provide a good experience for the shot-stopper.

Reading sits in the drop zone and are three points from safety, and are hopeful that the acquisition of Martinez would have a stabilizing effect on the defence. The Royals have shipped in 43 goals in 28 games in the Championship this season.

It remains to be seen if Martinez would be able to force himself in Gunners first XI for next season with Bernd Leno firmly established as the first choice goalkeeper.
