Done Deal: Liverpool seals transfer of long-term target, assigns squad number

After months of intensive pursuit, Liverpool have secured the signing of long term target Virgil van Dijk, a transfer that smashes the transfer record for the most amount spent on defender.

Liverpool have announced the capture of Van Dijk from Southampton for a fee in the region of £75m. The deal was able to pull through after the player tabled a transfer request in a bid to push for the Anfield switch.

The Reds have been chasing the defender and were close to signing Van Dijk last summer before things went sour as Southampton were not impressed with the manner in which Jurgen Klopp’s side chose to conduct business, earning Van Dijk a slight ban as he had to train alone.

However, all seems to be settled since Liverpool have agreed to a mammoth transfer fee which defies belief. Van Dijk’s transfer eclipses the £52m Manchester City paid to Monaco for the services of Benjamin Mendy in July.

The 26-year-old is expected to be complete the transfer on 1 January when the transfer window opens. He is expected to wear the no. 4 jersey previously worn by Kolo Toure.

Van Dijk is expected to resume duty in Liverpool’s central defence which has come under intense criticism this season. However, he will not feature in the away trip to Burnley on Monday.
