Why Fellaini’s injury scare may affect Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini is set to be on the sidelines as Red Devils travel to Moscow for their second UEFA Champions League group match against CSKA Moscow. The midfielder sustained an ankle injury due to a harsh tackle from Shane Long in their 1 – 0 win against Southampton on Saturday.

Here are reasons why we believe Fellaini’s injury may affect Manchester United squad in the days ahead.

Paul Pogba Injury

With Paul Pogba being on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury, Marouane Fellaini has done well to fill the void the £89m man’s absence may cause in the United squad. So Fellaini being on the sidelines too should be a major source of concern for the United squad as they will have to make do with a Matic – Herrera midfield pivot.

Fellaini’s Impact on the Manchester United’s squad

The Belgian’s performance against Stoke City saw him being shortlisted for the Man of the match award and it’s imperative to note that he had this match statistics:

Most passes (43)

Most aerial duels won (5)

Most fouls suffered (3)

Most blocks (2).

With Fellaini out on the sidelines, the available midfield options for Manchester United remains Michael Carrick, Ander Hererra, Nemanja Matic and 20-year-old Scott McTominay who featured in their League Cup win against Burton Albion.

It remains to be seen how Mourinho’s side would play without Fellaini whose has made Paul Pogba’s absence have a soft landing at Old Trafford.
