Good News: Arsenal are set to complete their first summer signing

Arsenal are reportedly weighing up a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos ahead of a potential move to the Emirates this summer.

The Gunners defence was one of their Achilles heel this term having conceded the highest number of goals among the top six clubs and would only be fitting for the north London club to bolster their defensive options ahead of next season.

The centre-back pairing of Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscienly was awful and a long-term injury to Laurent Koscienly towards the end of the campaign has seen the Gunners earmark Greek international Papastathopoulos as the man to fix Arsenal’s leaky defence.

Reports from Bild, suggests that the centre-back could be set to be the Gunners first signing post Arsene Wenger era and could be available for a fee in the region of £17.5 million.

Since moving to the Signal Iduna Park from Werder Bremen for a reported fee of €9.5 million in the summer of 2013, he has established himself as a mainstay in the heart of Dortmund’s defence and he is often regarded as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga.

The 29-year-old was a rock at the back for the German outfit across all competitions this term having played 43 times and scoring thrice.

He is known for his aerial prowess, interceptions, awareness, anticipation, tackling, passing, concentration, and leadership qualities.
