How Manchester United Could Line Up Without Pogba

Manchester United’s impressive start to the season was dealt a huge blow Tuesday night when midfielder Paul Pogba limped off the pitch with a hamstring injury.

This brings the first real test for Jose Mourinho as the football world is waiting to see how the team will cope without their most expensive acquisition ever.

While many are still debating whether United will survive his absence or not, we take a look at how the Red Devils could line up without him.

  1. Ander Herrera’s time to shine in Mourinho’s 4-5-1 formation

Many have wondered why Herrera has been overlooked many times by Jose Mourinho this season.

The midfielder no doubt carries out the gaffer’s instructions to the letter and was very effective for Manchester United last season.

He however has the chance he has been craving since the season began and he’s widely expected to fill the void Pogba has left almost perfectly.

The only cause for worry could be his level of creativity as Pogba outshines him in that area.

  1. The legendary Carrick to the rescue in a 4-5-1 formation

Michael Carrick has been another noticeable figure missing in the United setup since the season began. He might be 36-years-old but he hasn’t lost his creative ability.

The former England captain can control the midfield again just like he did in the days of Sir Alex Ferguson by forming a good partnership with Matic.

The main concern about Carrick is that, he can’t be playing week-in week-out like his midfield rivals

  1. Fellaini also in a 4-5-1 formation

Despite not being loved by many United Faithful, Marouane Fellaini has always delivered when called upon by Jose Mourinho and his latest outing against Basel shows he could function well alongside Matic.

The problem with the Belgian is that there are no guarantees about him, he could have a very good game today and be the bad apple at the crucial moment in the next game.

He could also be neutralized easily in the midfield as many players have even confirmed they fear him more when he’s upfront.

  1. Fellaini and Herrera in a 4-3-3 formation

With Herrera more likely to get the nod ahead of others, Mourinho could decide to bolster the depth of the midfield with the addition of Fellaini who could be more mobile and cause problems for United’s opponents.

United will however be forced to drop a man upfront.

  1. Mourinho could close-up the midfield with a 3-5-2 formation

The Portuguese coach could still use the trio of Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Nemanja Matic in the midfield but use wing backs in order to give his midfielders a bit of freedom.

This idea however looks like what the former Real Madrid coach will not go for unless he’s playing a team like Chelsea or Arsenal who play a similar formation.

Mourinho has said there’s no problem replacing Pogba but the fact remains that the 24-year-old will be missed.
