Jorginho vs Alberto Aquilani: Paul Merson makes huge claim

Former Arsenal forward and fan of Chelsea Paul Merson has expressed concern about Jorginho’s Premier League career with hopes it won’t be a repeat of Italian midfielder Alberto Aquilani.

Jorginho who joined Stamford Bridge from Napoli with a £57million fee in July has been lined up for this afternoon’s season opener against Huddersfield.

Merson believes that the 26-year-old will become a top player at the Blues if given time and opportunity to adjust.

Notwithstanding, Merson is to an extent concerned about the possibility of Jorginho to flop like Aquilani did at Liverpool.

On Sky Sports Merson said “When he (Aquilani) came over to Liverpool, he had all those figures, he was the best passer in Italy.

“They don’t play the way we play. In Italy you get the ball off the goalie, you get your head up and you start spraying it left, right and centre”

“When Aquilani came over, he’d get the ball and somebody (would take it) and he’d be like ‘where’s the ball gone?’. So all them things will take time.”

In 2009 Aquilani moved from Roma to join Liverpool for a £20million fee. However, in three years he made 28 appearances and only scored twice, was sent on loan twice and in 2002 he permanently joined Fiorentina.

However, Jorginho with his first Premier League appearance this afternoon scored from the penalty spot just before half time to double the advantage after N’Golo Kante scored the first goal for the Blues.
