Klopp reveals real reasons behind Alisson purchase

Liverpool Boss has revealed that he nearly gave up on signing new stopper Alisson Becker after the situation that occurred in the Champions League final. Former number one Loris Karius made several high profile errors in the match gifting Real Madrid two goals as they claimed the title three years on the trot.

Karius became a target of abuse and isolation from many fans across the globe leading to calls for a better goalkeeper to be signed by the German tactician. Klopp initially backed the 25-year old stopper before making a U-turn signing Alisson from Roma in a £56 million deal.

Revealing in a recent interview with Kicker  Klopp admitted that he was reluctant to sign Alisson despite the 25-year-old being on the club’s radar for a while. He also said that he felt an obligation to back Karius during that period which made him uncertain of getting the Brazillian stopper.

However, Klopp felt that the club had an obligation to field the best players in all position which made him sanction the purchase of Alisson.

“We simply identified another keeper, who is better, and signed him,” he told Kicker. “I didn’t tell Karius what he wanted to hear, but how it is. The Champions League final had nothing to do with us getting Alisson. Even if he had won it and Alisson would have been on the market we would have still signed him.

“How the people reacted negatively to Karius after the final, tried to isolate him, almost made me not get Alisson and rather stick it out with Karius. But we had to be professional. Our job is to have the best players at every position.

Alisson has been solid so far since his move from Roma and kept a clean sheet in the Reds first game of the season against West Ham while Karius is reportedly on his way to Turkish outfit Besiktas.

Alisson is a massive upgrade from Karius who looked like a liability during his time at Anfield and would be expected to bring stability to the last line of defence this season.
