Liverpool are set to lose out on the signature of in demand midfielder Adrien Rabiot according to reports from England.

The Guardian claims that the French midfielder is set to sign a contract worth £170,000 a week to join Spanish side Barcelona.

Rabiot had been linked to the Reds after refusing a contract from PSG and it was claimed that the club were close to agreeing on a deal. However Barcelona have emerged favourites for the 23-year-old and are set to close the deal.

Rabiot is highly rated across Europe and has the ability to play as a central midfielder or deeper in the midfield.

Liverpool are currently stocked in the middle of the park with the likes of Naby Keita, Fabinho, Henderson, Lallana and Milner currently battling for first-team opportunities. This could be a factor in the club relaxing their stance in signing the midfielder.

Despite this, Liverpool will be passing on the opportunity to sign a player that could develop into a world-class performer.  The Reds have been active in the transfer window as a number of players have departed the club which includes Dominic Solanke and Nathaniel Clyne.

Liverpool remains top of the league with 54 points, four points ahead of nearest challengers Manchester City.
