Manchester United dealt blow as transfer target suffers injury

Manchester United have been dealt a blow ahead of the January transfer window, as it is reported that Leon Goretzka is set to undergo scan for a “recurrent” leg problem.

The 22-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester United, with English sources suggesting that Schalke 04 could sanction the midfielder’s move in January if all goes to plan.

Arsenal have also been on the player’s case as well, and earlier this month, Goretzka was quoted as saying that he would make a decision on his career in the near future. His current contract with the German club runs out next summer hence their keen interest to make some profit on the €3 million fee they paid for his services in the summer of 2013.

The move may have hit snag as Schalke have revealed that the German international has suffered a setback following the injuring that saw him miss four games between October to November this year.

‘‘Leon Goretzka has suffered a recurrence of the injury in his lower leg,’’ Schalke posted on Twitter.

‘‘In order to put these continuous and worsening pains to bed, Leon will undergo examinations over the coming days.

‘‘Until then, it is unclear as to when Leon will be fit to train and play once again. Get well soon, Leon.’’

This comes as a shock for Man United who are preparing for life after Marouane Fellani. The 30-year-old looks set to join French side Paris Saint-Germain which has raised some questions over his likely replacement. United are reported to be interested in a number of players such as Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Goretzka but they may have to forget the latter who is injury prone.
