Manchester United in race to complete £55M double swoop in January

Manchester United search for a defender continues with the latest news from Italy linking the club to Juventus centre-back Medhi Benatia.

According to Tuttosport, Benatia is viewed by United Chiefs as a cheap addition to the defence. The Morroco International is currently unhappy in Turin and looks certain to leave the club in January.

Juventus are looking towards Mathijs de Ligt from Ajax as a replacement for Benatia and are expected to have competition from Manchester United. United are weighing up a bid of £40 million for the highly rated Dutch international and Barcelona are believed to be in the mix as well.

Furthermore, Inter Milan defender Milan Skriniar is also high on the list of defenders wanted by Jose Mourinho.

Benatia is expected to cost around £15 million and United could face stiff competition from rivals Arsenal for the signature of the 31-year-old defender. Benatia would be a good addition to the backline as he is a better defender than the current options available to Mourinho.

Benatia, who has made just five appearances this season, has experienced a trophy-laden career during his time at Juventus winning league titles in Germany and Italy. United have had a mixed season and are sitting 7th on the league table after 11 games.
