Mesut Ozil contract situation takes a new twist

The uncertainty surrounding the future of German international, Mesut Ozil has rocked the Gunners for over a year with the playmaker refusing to extend his contract at the Emirates beyond this season, but according to reports from English publication The Sun, the attacking midfielder contract situation seems to have taken a new turn.

According to reports, all hope might not be lost on the playmaker’s future with the north-London club growing confident of the World Cup winner signing a new deal after breakthrough in negotiations.

However, the German has demanded for an improved contract and a huge signing-on bonus if he is to extend his stay at the Emirates beyond this season.

The deal is reportedly expected to be in the region of three years and he is expected to pen a new deal before the end of the month.

The former Real Madrid midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Catalan giants, Barcelona in the winter transfer window and also a re-union with his former manager Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford next summer, but if both parties fail to reach an agreement before the January transfer window, the Gunners hierarchy will prefer to sell him abroad for a cut-price fee than strengthening a direct rival.

The 28-year-old endured a difficult start to the season due to injuries and inconsistency, but with the German gradually hitting top form, he will be crucial in the Gunners hunt for trophies and a return to the Champions League.
