Mourinho makes versatile midfielder no.1 January transfer target – report

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinhois keen on bringing Mateo Kovacic to Old Trafford according to various reports from England.

Mourinho is ready to strengthen his squad this January as he looks to cut rivals Manchester City’s lead at the top of the premier league. Mourinho rates Kovacic highly and sees the Croatian as a long term replacement for club captain Michael Carrick.

According to Spanish sports website Don balon the transfer may prove difficult this winter transfer window. Real Madrid Head Coach Zidane rates the Croatian well with the midfielder starting the El Classico against Barcelona.

Zidane is also reluctant to sell any of his players as Real Madrid aim to reduce Barcelona lead in La Liga and defend their Champions League title.

Kovacic is thought to favor the move as Mourinho has assured him of first team football and Manchester United has no problem in matching his wages.

The young midfielder wants more playing time ahead of the World Cup to cement his place in the Croatia Squad having started just once in La Liga this season.

Ed Woodward is likely to sanction the deal as there is a fear among Manchester United hierarchy that Mourinho has looked frustrated with the club transfer policy and could leave by the end of the season.

The 23 year-old Croatian known for his dribbling and play making abilities was signed for €30 million in 2015 from Inter Milan. Kovacic has made eight appearances for Real Madrid this season with just a solitary assist.

Kovacic could be the playmaker Mourinho needs to transform his midfield as he does not trust Mata and Mikitaryian to do the job this season.
