Chelsea have announced the signing of Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain on loan until the rest of the season. Higuain had been the subject of speculations in the past few weeks as news of his move to Chelsea intensified.

After weeks of negotiations between Chelsea, AC Milan, and Juventus, a deal was agreed for the 31-year-old. It is understood that Chelsea would pay a loan fee of €9million for the next six months with an option to buy permanently in the summer.  Higuain also agreed on a contract worth £170,000 a week to swap Italy for Juventus.

According to the official announcement on Chelsea’s website Higuain is expected to wear the no 9 jersey which was left vacant by Alvaro Morata at the start of the season. He would be expected to provide an all-round attacking threat in tandem with Eden Hazard.

In his first interview after completing the move, Higuain revealed his delight in the transfer and he is looking forward to playing for the club.

‘When the opportunity to join Chelsea presented itself I had to take it. It’s a team I’ve always liked that has a lot of history, a wonderful stadium and they play in the Premier League, a league I’ve always wanted to play in.

‘I now hope I can give back that trust Chelsea have shown me out on the pitch. I can’t wait to start and I hope to adapt as soon as possible.’

Chelsea chief Marina Granovskaia also revealed that the forward was the number one target in January and the club was looking forward to the player making an impact.

This was not an easy deal for us to do because of the numerous parties involved, but we are delighted we were able to make it happen and we look forward to seeing the impact Gonzalo will make for us in the second half of the season.’

Higuain has scored over 250 goals in his career which has seen him play for top teams like Real Madrid, Napoli, Juventus, and AC Milan.
