Potential stars of the 2018/2019 Champions League

The Champions League returns to action after the international break, and there are some mouth-watering ties to look forward to in the group stages. Last season Ronaldo, Modric and Salah were the star performers in Europe’s premier cup competition, but who will steal the headlines this season? Here we have a look at some of the less likely names looking to make their mark on the Champions League.

Jadon Sancho – Borussia Dortmund

The 18-year-old former Manchester City academy graduate has impressed in his short time in Germany. Last season his magnificent performance against Bayer Leverkusen helped to fire Dortmund to Champions League qualification, and he will be looking to make his mark on Europe’s premier tournament this season.

A left-winger by trade, Sancho has already impressed new manager Lucien Favre with his ability to make things happen and beat opponents. Dortmund are lacking in an attacking focal point and much of their success this season will depend on the performances of their wingers.

Despite being in a tough group alongside Atletico Madrid, Club Brugge and Monaco, Dortmund will be confident of progressing to the knock-out phases and Sancho could emerge as one of the leading talents in Europe if they do.

Christian Eriksen – Tottenham Hotspur

The Danish playmaker is already a household name in England and across Europe, but he isn’t often spoken about in the same terms as the world’s greatest players. Eriksen is the heartbeat of an exciting Tottenham side and his creativity is often the difference for his side in tight games. He’ll need to be at his best for Tottenham to have any chance of lifting the trophy in May. Tottenham are at 25/1 so various betting sites clearly feel they will need more than just an Eriksen masterclass to come out on top.

Group games against Barcelona, Inter Milan and PSV Eindhoven will give Eriksen the platform to shine on the biggest stage this season. If he recreates his performances domestically in Europe this term, he will be thrust into the limelight and finally get the recognition that his talent deserves.

Milan Skriniar – Inter Milan

Serie A has gone through a renaissance in recent years, and of the reasons for the resurgence of the Italian league is the emergence of some of Europe’s most coveted young talent. Inter Milan make their return to the Champions League this season after a six-year absence and 23-year-old centre-back Milan Skriniar will be eager to showcase his talents.

The Slovakian defender was signed by Inter last season and played every single minute of their league campaign as they finished 4th in Serie A. Skriniar has been described as a classic defender, who is towering, aggressive and formidable.

His performances last season have put him on the radar of Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho who has made no secrets about his desire to sign a world-class centre-back. Inter have added a raft of talent to their squad this summer, but the performances of Skriniar could be key to them restoring some European glory.

The rest

Obviously high-profile players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Gareth Bale and Kevin De Bruyne will be looking to shine in this year’s Champions League. But a crowded group stage has the possibility to throw the tournament wide open and provide a lesser-known name with the platform to rise to world stardom. Either that or Cristiano Ronaldo just wins…again.
