Rio Ferdinand reveals why Chelsea and Arsenal are not title contenders

Chelsea played a thrilling game against Arsenal on Saturday evening with the Blues winning 3-2 after initially throwing a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Pedro had put the Blues a goal up after racing to tap in Marcos Alonso pullback in a sweeping move while Alvaro Morata doubled the lead racing clear to finish after escaping the Gunners backline. Arsenal produced a surprising fight back from a rasping drive from Mkhitaryan while Alex Iwobi completed the fight back with a splendid finish just before halftime.

However, the arrival of Hazard changed the game as he made a driving run to the box setting up Marcos Alonso to hit the winner for the gunner. This makes it two victories and losses for Chelsea respectively. United legend Rio Ferdinand believes that both teams cannot win the league if they continue to defend haphazardly.

Ferdinand speaking to BT Sports insisted that though the attacking football was splendid by both teams the defending leaves much to be desired. The ex England international insisted that both clubs have to balance both aspects of play in their bid to have a shot at the title.

“This is crazy,” Ferdinand said.

“This is the story of the first half defensively for Arsenal. They do not track runners from midfield.

“The back four do not identify runners from midfield and don’t shape up to be able to defend that.

“They’ve got no idea of where people are on the pitch.

“There’s disarray in the Arsenal backline, not only there but in the midfield as well.

“This is a story of two teams wanting to go and attack, they do not want to defend. They’ve not got players that accept responsibility without the ball.

Chelsea next face a trip to play Newcastle while Arsenal seeks to gain three points against bottom-placed WestHam.
