Three reasons Batshuayi deserves more chances in Chelsea’s starting XI

It is an open secret that Conte is looking for a new striker, to compete with Morata for a starting berth in Chelsea’s  line-up. This is unsurprising as the Chelsea manager has on several occasions chosen to bench backup striker Michy Batshuayi even when Morata is injured or suspended. Batshuayi was signed for £33 million from Marseille in 2016.

TheBelgian striker has never had a long run in the first team until recently, with the 24-year-old scoring a brace in the recent FA cup match against Newcastle. Here are three reasons for Chelsea to keep faith in the Belgian Striker.

He is an excellent finisher

For all his deficiencies, Batshuayi is a proven goalscorer as evident in his goal to minute ratio, which stands at one goal every 99 minutes. This is exceptional considering most of his appearances have been from the substitute bench. Batshuayi’s finishing ability has never been in doubt, with his tally of 13 goals in 28 appearances.

He offers different option to Morata

Conte is known to prefer target men who bring a physical approach to the game, while being the focal point of attack. As seen with the blues being linked with Carroll and Dzeko, though Batshuayi does not offer much in link-up play but he is more of a poacher.

This attribute is useful when playing against stubborn defences, as seen with his goals against Atletico Madrid and the title-winning goal against West Brom last season. The Belgian’s movement in the box is a problem for most defenders as they find it difficult to keep up with him.

He can still improve

Batshuayi is still young and can improve in different aspects of his game if giving an extended run in the first eleven. His much derided build-up play has improved as evident with his sublime assist for Willian in the 4-0 demolition of Brighton last week. His all-round play is still a work in progress, but has shown signs of improving in recent weeks. The atriker has struck a good partnership with Hazard and Willian which should be allowed to blossom rather than shipping the player on loan.
