Three things we learnt from Manchester United victory against CSKA Moscow

Manchester United maintained their hundred percent record in the Champions League after a resounding 4-1 victory against Russian side CSKA Moscow at the VEB Arena, it was the fifth time United have scored four goals in all competitions. A brace from Romelu Lukaku, a penalty from Anthony Martial and a goal from Henrikh Mkhitaryan secured a comfortable victory for the Red Devils in Russia. However, the host host scored a consolation goal back in the dying minutes of the game.

Below are the three things we learned;

United strength in-depth is key

Despite some injury worries in the midfield for United, they still dominated proceedings from the blast of the whistle till the end. With Paul Pogba still out injured and with Fellaini and Michael Carrick not included in United squad to face CSKA Moscow due to minor injuries, a return for Ander Hererra into the starting line-up was inevitable as he partnered Nemanja Matic in the middle of the park. Anthony Martial was also brought back into the fray and gave a good account of himself with an excellent display scoring a goal and assisting two. The Red Devils have had a gruelling September so far and with the games coming in thick and fast in the coming months United strength in-depth will be key in their hunt for silverwares this season.

Romelu Lukaku’s purple patch continues

The Belgian forward has been nothing short but impressive since joining the Red Devils this summer, he took him just four minutes to put his side ahead at a ground where United have failed to win in their last two visits to the VEB Arena. The 24-year-old was a constant threat to the CSKA Moscow defence and could have gotten his first hattrick in a United shirt barring some brilliant saves from Igor Akinfeev. The Belgian forward has started the season on fire, scoring 10 goals in his last 9 matches and providing one assist in all competitions so far this season. Red-hot Romelu Lukaku and Manchester United are looking like a marriage made in heaven.

Anthony Martial’s form a selection headache for Jose Mourinho

Anthony Martial continued his impressive form for United last night scoring from the penalty spot and provided two assists for Romelu Lukaku in the first half. The Frenchman has failed to nail down a starting spot in the United’s starting line-up having being rotated with Marcus Rashford so far this term but his majestic display at the VEB Arena on Wednesday will definitely give Jose Mourinho a selection headache ahead of the game against Crystal Palace.
