The winter transfer window is here and clubs are eager to ensure they have enough health and quality in their squad to compete in the second half of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur who currently sit third in the English Premier League standing are resigned to losing their Belgian defender, Toby Alderweireld this season after extending his contract by a year.

The club have announced a one year contract extension for the defender that will expire in 2020. By activating this extension, the player is allowed to depart the club for as low as £25m.

Manchester United were reported to be hugely interested in the defender last summer but no transfer came to fruition.

Alderweireld who will be 30 in March, joined Tottenham in 2015 from Atletico Madrid, and has made 135 appearances for Pochettino’s side.

The Belgian has also featured 88 times for his country where he had an impressive campaign with them at the World Cup.

The Belgian faced a difficult time last season at club level following the signing of Sanchez. He lost his place in the side but he has featured somewhat this season for the London club.

Manchester United and Barcelona were reportedly keen on the defender but Tottenham claim no approaches were made for the player they bought for £11.5m in 2015.
