Manchester United have undergone a renaissance under temporary manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, evidence of the defensive frailties under Jose Mourinho remain as David de Gea had to make an impressive 11 saves in the recent win against Tottenham.

According to the Daily Post, the Red Devils are preparing to make an offer for Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly. The Senegalese defender has been linked to United in the past few seasons due to his impressive performances in Italy. Koulibaly has developed into one of the best defenders in Europe and United believe that he could be a long-term solution for the defence.

The 27-year-old has in recent weeks been making the headlines as a result of racist chants labelled towards him by Inter Milan fans. This could be a deciding factor in the player moving to United.

However, he is expected to cost a huge transfer fee as Napoli have over time suggested that the defender could cost a world record fee to leave the club. United are one of the few clubs in the world that can afford to spend big on the player and it remains to be seen how this transfer pans out.

Manchester United are currently on a six-game winning run but remain 6th in the league six points off the top 4 places.
